Intro

Hi! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why does tape have two sides that feel different?

The Big Idea

Tape is a sandwich. One side is a smooth backing made of plastic or paper. The other side is a thin coat of sticky stuff called adhesive! Let's find out how it works, in three easy steps!

Step 1

Step one: the backing is born! First, a thin film of plastic or paper is made. It's strong, and it's not sticky, so you can handle the roll. It's really two jobs on one strip.

Step 2

Step two: the sticky coat goes on! Adhesive is spread on one face only. It's a soft, grabby layer that clings to paper, boxes, and gifts. That's why the sticky side feels different.

Step 3

Step three: the release layer helps! A release coating on the backing lets each wrap peel free, so the roll doesn't weld itself into a brick. That trick makes tape easy to use. Knowing the parts helps us understand the whole idea.

A Closer Look

Let's look closely at tape! The backing is the smooth, strong side. The adhesive is the sticky side. And the release coating helps the roll unwind. Every part has an important job to do!

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Dull-looking tape often uses a paper backing, and shiny tape often uses plastic. Cold rooms make adhesive stiff, so tape grabs less. Folding a tiny tab at the end saves the next peel. Keep tape off skin and hair, because peeling it can sting. Wow, those are some amazing facts to share with your friends!

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Touch both faces of a tape scrap, with a grown-up to help. Which face clings to a shirt? What job did the other face do? Write down what you notice! Scientists always write down what they see. Have fun! Then share what you found with a friend or a grown-up.

Two different sides make tape work! Keep on wondering! Crafty Clover can be found on Amazon Books, Google Bookstore, and Apple Books. Available for purchase or download! Bye for now!
