Intro

Hi! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why does a trombone note drop when the slide moves out?

The Big Idea

A trombone is a long sliding tube. When the slide goes out, the column of air inside gets longer. A longer column vibrates more slowly, so the pitch falls! Let's find out how it works, in three easy steps!

Step 1

Step one: buzz the mouthpiece! Your lips buzz, and that starts the air inside the horn shaking. That buzz is the start of every trombone note.

Step 2

Step two: the slide moves out! Now extra brass tubing is added, so the air column gets longer. A longer tube gives the sound more room to stretch out.

Step 3

Step three: the note drops! The sound wave has more room, so it wiggles fewer times each second. The same buzz now sings a lower note! Seven slide positions are like seven different lengths of pipe! Knowing the parts helps us understand the whole idea.

A Closer Look

Let's look at a trombone! The slide is the part that moves in and out. You buzz your lips into the mouthpiece. And the sound comes out of the bell. Every part has an important job to do!

Quick Facts

Quick facts! First position is the slide pulled in. That's the shortest tube. Seventh position is almost an arm's length out. A mute in the bell changes the color of the sound, not the length rule. Give the slide room, so it doesn't poke anyone. Wow, those are some amazing facts to share with your friends!

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Hum into a cardboard tube, then tape on a second tube, with a grown-up to help. Did your hum sound lower? What did the extra length change? Write down what you hear! Scientists always write down what they see. Have fun! Then share what you found with a friend or a grown-up.

Outro

Longer tubes make lower notes! Keep on wondering! Crafty Clover can be found on Amazon Books, Google Bookstore, and Apple Books. Available for purchase or download! Bye for now!
