Intro
Hi! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why do referees use whistles?
The Big Idea
A whistle is like a tiny, super loud speaker. Its sharp blast cuts through crowd noise. So every player hears the same stop or start signal, at the very same instant! Let's find out how it works, in three easy steps!
Step 1
Step one: air hits the slot! The referee takes a big breath and blows. The stream of air is squeezed through a small opening. A tiny opening makes the air move faster.
Step 2
Step two: the note forms! The air rushes past a sharp edge and splits into fast pulses. Those pulses make a high, piercing note. A whistle is a lot like a tiny musical instrument.
Step 3
Step three: the sound spreads! A whistle blast travels farther than a yell, so everyone freezes or restarts on the same cue. One long blast can mean stop, and two short blasts can mean play on.
A Closer Look
Let's look inside a whistle! You blow into the mouthpiece. The air chamber is where the sound forms. Some whistles have a little pea inside that rattles. Every part has an important job to do!
Quick Facts
Quick facts! Pea-less whistles work in the rain, because nothing can stick. A good blast can top 100 decibels, so short and rare blasts are kinder to ears. Colored cards plus a whistle give eyes and ears the same message. Never blast a whistle right next to someone's ear.
Think Like a Scientist
Now, think like a scientist! Have a grown-up call 'stop' from across a yard, then use one short whistle. Which cue did you notice first? Why might a thin, high note win over a shout? Write down what you notice! Scientists always write down what they see. Have fun!

A whistle helps everybody hear the same thing! Keep on wondering! Crafty Clover can be found on Amazon Books, Google Bookstore, and Apple Books. Available for purchase or download! Bye for now!
