Intro

Hey there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why do TVs show moving pictures?

The Big Idea

A TV shows lots of still pictures, one after another, so fast that your brain blends them into motion. This is called persistence of vision. Modern screens use millions of tiny colored dots called pixels, and they change 24 to 60 times every second! It's just like a flipbook made of light.

Camera Films

Step one: the camera films. It captures a scene as a row of still pictures, called frames. Cable, dish, or internet then sends the frames to your house!

Pixels Light Up

Step two: pixels light up. Tiny red, green, and blue dots mix to make every color you see. Together, they make one sharp picture!

Frames Swap Fast

Step three: frames swap fast. The screen replaces the picture dozens of times a second. Your eyes hold each flash just long enough to glue them together into smooth motion!

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look at a TV! Zoom in on the screen, and you find pixels. Each pixel has red, green, and blue dots. They mix to make every color. And the remote just tells the TV what to do!

Quick Facts

Quick facts! A movie is often 24 frames per second, and sports TV is often 60. If frames come too slowly, motion looks jumpy, like an old flipbook. Closed captions are extra text sent right beside the picture. And movies, phones, and video games use the same flipbook idea!

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Make a flipbook. Draw a stick figure on sticky notes, changing it a little each page. Stack them and flip the pages. How fast must you flip to make the figure walk? What happens if you flip slowly?

Outro

TVs show us that many still pictures can trick our eyes into seeing motion. Science is amazing! Crafty Clover can be found on Amazon Books, Google Bookstore, and Apple Books. Available for purchase or download! Bye for now!
