Book 29, Question 77 · Video
When is the best time of day to water plants?
Early morning is best. Cool air means less water evaporates, so more soaks in, and plants have water for the hot day. Leaves dry in the sun, which helps prevent fungus. Watering at midday wastes water as it evaporates quickly. Watering in the evening can leave leaves wet all night, inviting disease. Aim water at the soil, not the leaves.

Intro
Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. When is the best time of day to water plants?
The Big Idea
Watering plants seems simple! But timing matters. When is the best time of day?
Morning Is Best
Step one: Morning Is Best. Early morning is the best time to water. Cool air means less water evaporates, so more soaks into the soil and plants have water for the hot day.
Not at Noon
Step two: Not at Noon. Watering at midday wastes water, because it evaporates quickly in the heat. Much of it disappears before the roots can drink.
Not at Night
Step three: Not at Night. Watering in the evening can leave leaves wet all night, which invites disease. In the morning, leaves dry in the sun, and it's best to aim water at the soil, not the leaves.
A Closer Look
Let's take a closer look! Best time. Evaporates. Wet leaves. Aim here.
Quick Facts
Quick facts! Water at the base of the plant rather than on top of its leaves. Morning saves water. Wet leaves invite fungus. Noon water evaporates.
Think Like a Scientist
Now, think like a scientist! Pick two identical potted plants. Water one in the morning. Water the other in the afternoon. Later, feel the soil of each. Which one stayed damper?
