Book 29, Question 44 · Video
Why do garden plants droop on hot afternoons?
On hot days, leaves lose water through tiny pores faster than the roots can supply it. The plant's cells lose their water pressure and go limp, just as a balloon goes slack. In the evening, when it's cooler, most plants perk up. If a plant is still wilted in the morning, it needs water. Watering in the morning helps plants get through the heat.

Intro
Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why do garden plants droop on hot afternoons?
The Big Idea
On hot afternoons, garden plants droop! They look tired and limp. Why does that happen?
Losing Water
Step one: Losing Water. On hot days, leaves lose water through tiny pores faster than the roots can supply it. The plant can't keep up.
Going Limp
Step two: Going Limp. The plant's cells lose their water pressure and go limp. It's like a balloon going slack when some air escapes.
Perking Up
Step three: Perking Up. In the cool evening, most plants perk up again. If a plant is still wilted in the morning, it needs water, and morning watering helps plants get through the heat.
A Closer Look
Let's take a closer look! Lose water. Runs low. Drops. Check again.
Quick Facts
Quick facts! Plant cells are stiffened by water pressure, called turgor. Plants perk up in the evening. Still wilted? Needs water. Cells are like balloons.
Think Like a Scientist
Now, think like a scientist! Find a limp celery stalk. Put it in a glass of water overnight. Compare it with a fresh stalk. Is it stiff again? What do you think happened?
