What is a microclimate in a garden?

What Crafty Clover says in this video

Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. What is a microclimate in a garden?

The Big Idea

Some spots in a garden are warmer than others! They have their own tiny weather. What is a microclimate?

Warm Walls

Step one: Warm Walls. A microclimate is a small spot where the weather is a little different from the area around it. A sunny, south-facing wall can be several degrees warmer, because bricks soak up heat and give it back at night.

Cold and Windy

Step two: Cold and Windy. A low corner can collect cold air and get frost first. A windy corner dries out quickly.

Using Them

Step three: Using Them. Gardeners use these spots to place plants that like warmth, shelter, or shade. Cities are warmer than the countryside, so a city garden can be a microclimate too.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look! Holds heat. Frosts first. Dries fast. Warmer too.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Cities are warmer than the countryside, so a city garden can be its own microclimate. Bricks store heat. Cold air sinks low. Wind dries soil.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! With a grown-up, take a thermometer outside on a sunny afternoon. Check it in the shade. Check it near a south-facing wall. Check it in an open spot. Where would you plant tomatoes?

Outro

A microclimate is a small spot with slightly different weather. Sunny walls can be warmer, low corners frost first, and windy spots dry fast, so gardeners place plants where the warmth, shelter, or shade suits them. Science is amazing!
