What Crafty Clover says in this video

Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why do table tennis paddles have rubber with pimples?

The Big Idea

Table tennis paddles have bumpy or smooth rubber! Each one does something different. Let's see what.

Rubber and Sponge

Step one: Rubber and Sponge. Table tennis paddles are covered in thin rubber over sponge. Some have tiny bumps called pimples that face out or in.

Spin

Step two: Spin. Smooth rubber grips the ball and makes lots of spin. Pimples change the spin and make shots unpredictable.

Choosing

Step three: Choosing. Players choose rubbers that suit their style. The sponge underneath gives spring, and rules control the thickness.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look! Lots of spin. Tricky shots. Gives spring. Limit thickness.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Players can have a different rubber on each side of the paddle. Smooth makes spin. Pimples trick opponents. Sponge adds spring.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Rub a ball on a washcloth. Rub it on a smooth plate. Feel the difference in grip. Try spinning it on each. Which grabs more?
