Why is running on sand so tiring?

Video · 1:43 · Crafty Clover explains, from A Million Whys Book 28

Sand gives way under your foot, so some of your push is lost as the grains shift. Your legs also have to lift your foot higher and work harder to keep balance. It absorbs energy rather than giving it back, unlike a hard track that springs back a little. That is why athletes sometimes train on sand to build strength. Running on soft sand is great exercise.

Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why is running on sand so tiring?

The Big Idea

Running on the beach looks fun! But it's really tiring. Why is sand so hard to run on?

Shifting Grains

Step one: Shifting Grains. Sand gives way under your foot, so some of your push is lost as the grains shift. Your legs have to lift your foot higher and work harder to keep balance.

No Spring

Step two: No Spring. Sand absorbs energy rather than giving it back. A hard track springs back a little, but sand doesn't.

Great Training

Step three: Great Training. That's why athletes sometimes train on sand to build strength. Running on soft sand is great exercise.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look! Feet sink. Lift higher. Work to balance. Build muscles.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Sand running is gentle on joints but harder on muscles. Sand shifts underfoot. Absorbs your energy. Builds strong legs.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Walk 20 steps on sand. Walk 20 steps on a hard path. Notice how your legs feel. Which felt easier? Why do you think so?

Outro

Running on sand is tiring because the grains shift and your push is lost, so legs work harder to lift and balance. Sand absorbs energy instead of springing back. It's great training for strong legs! Give it a try. Science is amazing! Remember, every big discovery starts with a small question. Keep looking, keep learning, and keep asking why!
