Book 28, Question 19 · Video
Why is a hockey puck flat instead of round?
A flat puck slides smoothly across the ice and doesn't roll away or bounce wildly like a ball. It is made of hard rubber and weighs about six ounces, heavy enough to be shot fast but not too heavy for sticks. Pucks used in games are often frozen first so they bounce less. Hockey was developed in Canada, and the puck design suits the sport.

What Crafty Clover says in this video
Intro
Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why is a hockey puck flat instead of round?
The Big Idea
Hockey uses a flat puck instead of a ball. Why flat? Let's slide into it!
Sliding Smoothly
Step one: Sliding Smoothly. A flat puck slides smoothly across the ice. It doesn't roll away or bounce wildly like a ball.
Hard Rubber
Step two: Hard Rubber. A puck is made of hard rubber and weighs about six ounces. It's heavy enough to be shot fast but not too heavy for sticks.
Frozen Pucks
Step three: Frozen Pucks. Pucks used in games are often frozen first so they bounce less. Hockey was developed in Canada, and the puck design suits the sport.
A Closer Look
Let's take a closer look! Slides smoothly. Just heavy enough. Bounces less. Shoots fast.
Quick Facts
Quick facts! A standard puck is three inches across and one inch thick. Frozen pucks bounce less. Hockey developed in Canada. Slides, doesn't roll.
Think Like a Scientist
Now, think like a scientist! Slide a flat coaster across a smooth floor. Roll a small ball the same way. Compare their paths. Which went straighter? Which bounced around?
Outro
A hockey puck is flat so it slides smoothly across the ice without rolling or bouncing wildly. It's hard rubber weighing about six ounces, and game pucks are often frozen to bounce less. It is the perfect shape for ice. Science is amazing! The world is full of surprises. Keep asking big questions, and keep exploring with me!
