Why does a curveball curve?

What Crafty Clover says in this video

Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why does a curveball curve?

The Big Idea

Batters swing, and the ball dips away! That's a curveball. How does it curve?

Topspin

Step one: Topspin. A curveball leaves the pitcher's hand spinning forward with a lot of topspin. The spin is the secret.

Unequal Air

Step two: Unequal Air. As the ball flies, the spinning surface drags air around with it, making the air pressure on the sides unequal. That pushes the ball down and sideways, so it dips before it reaches the batter.

Not Magic

Step three: Not Magic. The ball is not magic. The spin changes the way air flows around it.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look! The pitcher snaps. The ball spins. Air pushes unevenly. The ball dips.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! A good curveball can spin about 15 times in the 0.4 seconds it takes to reach the plate. Topspin makes it dip. Air pushes unevenly. Throw away from windows.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Go outdoors, away from windows and people. Throw a foam ball with strong spin. Then throw one with no spin. Compare their paths. Does the spinning one curve?

Outro

A curveball curves because it's thrown with lots of topspin. The spinning surface drags air, making the pressure unequal, which pushes the ball down and sideways. It's not magic, just air and spin! Science is amazing! The world is full of surprises. Keep asking big questions, and keep exploring with me! Crafty Clover can be found on Amazon Books, Google Bookstore, and Apple Books.
