Book 26, Question 122 · Video
Why do engineers sometimes test things until they break?
Testing something to its breaking point shows how strong it truly is and where it fails first. For example, an airplane wing may be bent far beyond normal use in a lab. If it breaks only at a much higher force than ever happens in flight, engineers know there is a big safety margin. Learning how and where a design breaks helps make it safer.

What Crafty Clover says in this video
Intro
Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why do engineers sometimes test things until they break?
The Big Idea
Sometimes engineers break things on purpose! Why would they do that? To learn how strong things really are.
Breaking Point
Step one: Breaking Point. Testing something to its breaking point shows how strong it truly is and where it fails first. That's valuable information.
Airplane Wings
Step two: Airplane Wings. An airplane wing may be bent far beyond normal use in a lab. If it breaks only at a much higher force than ever happens in flight, there is a big safety margin.
Safer Designs
Step three: Safer Designs. Learning how and where a design breaks helps make it safer. Engineers can strengthen weak spots.
A Closer Look
Let's take a closer look! Start with normal. Add more. Find where it breaks. See the safety margin.
Quick Facts
Quick facts! A safety margin means building stronger than needed. Wings bend a lot. Find weak spots. Safer for everyone.
Think Like a Scientist
Now, think like a scientist! Make a paper bridge between two cups. Stack books on it one at a time. Count how many it holds. When does it collapse? Try folding the paper and test again.
Outro
Engineers test things until they break to find their true strength and where they fail. An airplane wing that breaks only far beyond flight forces has a big safety margin. Science is amazing!
