Book 26, Question 122

Why do engineers sometimes test things until they break?

Testing something to its breaking point shows how strong it truly is and where it fails first.

For example, an airplane wing may be bent far beyond normal use in a lab. If it breaks only at a much higher force than ever happens in flight, engineers know there is a big safety margin. Learning how and where a design breaks helps make it safer.
