Book 26, Question 106 · Video
How do engineers test a bike helmet?
Testers put a helmet on a head-shaped model that has sensors inside. They drop it onto a hard metal surface from a set height, so every helmet gets the same test. The sensors measure how much shock reaches the model’s head, and a helmet must stay below a safety limit to pass. Helmets must meet standards before they can be sold. Testers also check the straps.

Intro
Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. How do engineers test a bike helmet?
The Big Idea
A bike helmet protects your head. But how do engineers know it works? They test it!
Head Model
Step one: Head Model. Testers put a helmet on a head-shaped model that has sensors inside. It acts like a real head.
Drop Test
Step two: Drop Test. They drop it onto a hard metal surface from a set height, so every helmet gets the same test. The sensors measure how much shock reaches the head.
Passing
Step three: Passing. A helmet must stay below a safety limit to pass and meet standards before it can be sold. Testers also check the straps.
A Closer Look
Let's take a closer look! The shell spreads force. Foam soaks up shock. Straps hold it on. Labels show it passed.
Quick Facts
Quick facts! Helmets are tested at several spots, including the front, sides, and back. Foam soaks up shock. Look for the label. Replace after a crash.
Think Like a Scientist
Now, think like a scientist! Put on your helmet. Make sure it sits level on your forehead. Tighten the straps so they're snug. Ask a grown-up to check it. Wear it every ride!
Outro
Engineers test bike helmets by dropping them on a head model with sensors from a set height. The shock must stay below a safety limit, and straps are checked too. Science is amazing!
