Book 25, Question 134 · Video
How do map layers help planners?
Planners use computer mapping, called GIS. Each layer of the map shows one kind of information: roads, pipes, trees, parks, flood zones, or buildings. By stacking layers, planners can see where problems and opportunities lie. For example, they can find areas far from parks or places likely to flood. Maps help them make wise choices.

What Crafty Clover says in this video
Intro
Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. How do map layers help planners?
The Big Idea
Planners have a magic trick: stacking maps! Each map layer shows something different. Let's see how it helps.
GIS
Step one: GIS. Planners use computer mapping, called GIS. Each layer of the map shows one kind of information.
Many Layers
Step two: Many Layers. Layers can show roads, pipes, trees, parks, flood zones, or buildings. By stacking layers, planners see where problems and opportunities lie.
Wise Choices
Step three: Wise Choices. For example, they can find areas far from parks or places likely to flood. Maps help them make wise choices.
A Closer Look
Let's take a closer look! Roads show travel. Pipes show water. Trees show green. Flood zones show risks.
Quick Facts
Quick facts! GIS can show how a city changes over time. Satellites add photos. Find missing parks. Computers stack layers.
Think Like a Scientist
Now, think like a scientist! Draw roads on one clear sheet. Draw parks on another. Draw houses on a third. Stack them to see the whole map. What do you notice when they are together?
Outro
Map layers help planners by showing one kind of information each, like roads, pipes, or flood zones. Stacking them in GIS reveals problems and opportunities. Stacking layers lets planners see the whole picture at once, almost like having a superpower. Science is amazing! The world is full of surprises.
