Why do some cities have ferries?

What Crafty Clover says in this video

Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why do some cities have ferries?

The Big Idea

Some cities are split by water. Instead of always building bridges, they use boats! Let's ride a ferry.

Crossing Water

Step one: Crossing Water. Where water cuts a city in two, a ferry can carry people and cars across. It saves building an expensive bridge or tunnel.

Floating

Step two: Floating. Boats float because they push away water equal to their weight. So even big, heavy ferries loaded with cars and people stay afloat.

Canadian Ferries

Step three: Canadian Ferries. Toronto's ferries take people to the Toronto Islands. Ferries are important in Vancouver and Halifax, too.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look! The hull floats. Cars park on one deck. People ride on another. It docks at each side.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Some ferries are powered by electricity. Life jackets are on board. Toronto Islands by ferry. Ships push away water.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Float a toy boat in a tub of water. Add coins one at a time. Count how many it can carry before sinking. Try a boat with a wider bottom. Which carried more?
