Book 25, Question 32 · Video
Why do roads have painted lines, and what do solid and dashed lines mean?
Painted lines tell drivers where each lane is and which way traffic goes. In Canada and the United States, yellow lines separate traffic going in opposite directions, and white lines separate lanes going the same way. A dashed line means drivers may pass or change lanes when it is safe, and a solid line means stay in your lane. Crews repaint lines often because tires and snowplows wear them away.

What Crafty Clover says in this video
Intro
Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why do roads have painted lines, and what do solid and dashed lines mean?
The Big Idea
Roads have painted lines in yellow and white. Some are solid, and some are dashed. Each one sends drivers a message!
Lanes
Step one: Lanes. Painted lines tell drivers where each lane is and which way traffic goes. They keep traffic organized.
Colors
Step two: Colors. In Canada and the United States, yellow lines separate traffic going in opposite directions. White lines separate lanes going the same way.
Solid or Dashed
Step three: Solid or Dashed. A dashed line means drivers may pass or change lanes when it is safe. A solid line means stay in your lane. Crews repaint lines often because tires and snowplows wear them away.
A Closer Look
Let's take a closer look! Yellow separates directions. White separates lanes. Dashed means you may pass. Solid means stay put.
Quick Facts
Quick facts! Paint trucks can spray a long stripe while rolling slowly along the road. Road paint often has tiny glass beads that shine in headlights. Snowplows wear lines away. Some lanes are for bikes.
Think Like a Scientist
Now, think like a scientist! Draw a road with a yellow center line and white edge lines. Make one section where cars may pass, with a dashed line. Make another where they may not, with a solid line. Add some cars. Explain your road to a grown-up.
Outro
Road lines show lanes and directions. Yellow separates opposite traffic, white separates same-direction lanes, dashed lines allow passing when safe, and solid lines mean stay in your lane.
