Intro
Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why do some wells run dry?
The Big Idea
A well can work for years, and then suddenly stop. Where did the water go? The water table dropped!
Below the Well
Step one: Below the Well. Wells run dry when the water table drops below the bottom of the well. Then the water is out of reach.
Causes
Step two: Causes. This can happen in a drought, when little rain soaks in. It also happens when more water is pumped out than gets refilled.
Solutions
Step three: Solutions. Shallow wells go dry first. People can dig deeper wells or save water. Using less water helps underground water recover.
A Closer Look
Let's take a closer look! A drought means less rain. Overpumping takes too much. The water table falls. The well runs dry.
Quick Facts
Quick facts! Some underground water stores take hundreds or thousands of years to refill. Short showers save lots of water. Fixing leaky taps saves water. Rain refills the ground slowly.
