Video · 1:58 · Crafty Clover explains, from A Million Whys Book 24

With a grown-up, put leaf litter in a funnel over a jar, with a screen to hold the litter. Shine a cool LED lamp above it. The litter slowly dries from the top, and tiny creatures move downward away from the light and dryness, falling into the jar. A magnifying glass lets you look at them.

Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. How can a funnel and a lamp show you what lives in soil?

The Big Idea

A funnel and a lamp can help you meet tiny soil creatures. It is a simple trap that scientists use too. It is called a Berlese funnel!

Set It Up

Step one: Set It Up. With a grown-up, put leaf litter in a funnel over a jar, with a screen to hold the litter. Shine a cool LED lamp above it.

Creatures Move

Step two: Creatures Move. The litter slowly dries from the top. Tiny creatures move downward, away from the light and dryness, and fall into the jar.

Look and Release

Step three: Look and Release. A magnifying glass lets you look at them up close. Afterward, put the animals back outside where you found them.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look! The lamp shines from above. The leaf litter dries slowly. The funnel guides creatures down. The jar catches them.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! The Berlese funnel is named after an Italian scientist, Antonio Berlese. You might find mites, springtails, and tiny beetles. A cool LED lamp is safer and will not cook the creatures. Scientists use these traps to count soil creatures.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Try the funnel trap with a grown-up. Collect a little leaf litter from outside. After a few hours, count the creatures you find. Draw your favorite one. Then release them where you found them.

Outro

A Berlese funnel uses a cool lamp to slowly dry leaf litter, so tiny creatures move down, away from the light, into a jar where you can look at them before releasing them. Science is amazing! The world under your feet is full of surprises. Keep digging into big questions, and keep exploring with me! Crafty Clover can be found on Amazon Books, Google Bookstore, and Apple Books.
