Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why does a puff of smoke appear when a plane lands?

The Big Idea

When a plane lands, you may see a puff of smoke. The wheels were not spinning yet. Friction makes a tiny bit of rubber wear off!

Still Wheels

Step one: still wheels. A plane's wheels are not spinning when it first touches the runway. But the plane is moving very fast.

Sudden Spin

Step two: sudden spin. The tires must go from standing still to spinning very quickly. They rub against the runway, and friction wears off a tiny bit of rubber.

Built Tough

Step three: built tough. That rub makes the puff of smoke you see. Tires are built to handle this over and over, and then they are replaced.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look! The tire is still. The runway is racing by. Friction heats the rubber. A tiny puff appears.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! The smoke is tiny bits of rubber. Tires are filled with a gas under high pressure. They can handle many landings. Worn tires are later replaced.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Ask a grown-up for an eraser and some paper. Rub the eraser quickly on the paper. Look for the little bits of rubber it leaves. Landing tires do something similar on the runway. Write down what you notice, and share it with a grown-up.

Outro

Landing smoke comes from friction as still tires suddenly spin on a fast runway, wearing off a tiny bit of rubber that floats up as a puff. Science is amazing! What will you discover next? Every question is a new adventure, so keep wondering and keep exploring with me! Ask a grown-up to help you try the eraser mission, and see what you can find out about friction and rubber. Keep looking up! Crafty Clover can be found on Amazon Books, Google Bookstore, and Apple Books. Available for purchase or download! Bye for now!
