How Far Can You See From a Plane Window?

What Crafty Clover says in this video

Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. How far can you see from a plane window?

The Big Idea

A plane window view feels huge. The ground shrinks into tiny shapes. On a clear day you can see for miles!

Climb High

Step one: climb high. From about 35,000 feet, you can see over 200 miles on a clear day. The higher you go, the farther you can see.

Tiny Ground

Step two: shrink the ground. The ground looks like a colorful quilt, and people, cars, and houses look tiny. You can spot lakes, mountains, and cities from far away.

Curve and Glow

Step three: notice the curve. The horizon appears very slightly curved because Earth is a ball. At night, you can see the glow of cities from the sky.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look! You sit high above the ground. The horizon is very far away. Earth looks slightly curved. Cars and houses look tiny.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! From 35,000 feet, you can see over 200 miles to the horizon on a clear day. The ground looks like a colorful quilt. Clouds look like fluffy fields below. At night, you can see the glow of cities from the sky.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Draw what you think the view looks like from a plane window. Include clouds and the curve of the horizon. Add tiny lakes, mountains, or cities. Think about how small cars and houses would look. Show your picture to a grown-up and explain the scale.
