How Do Bush Planes Land on Short, Bumpy Strips?

What Crafty Clover says in this video

Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. How do bush planes land on short, bumpy strips?

The Big Idea

Some places have no airports. Bush planes can land on gravel, snow, or water. How do they manage?

Built Tough

Step one: built tough. Bush planes are built to take off and land in very short spaces, even on gravel, snow, or water. They have big, soft tires or skis, and strong legs.

Big Flaps

Step two: big flaps. Their wings have flaps that make a lot of lift at low speed. The pilot lands slowly, into the wind.

Remote Places

Step three: remote places. Bush planes help people reach remote places in northern Canada. There are few roads there.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look! The tires are big and soft. Flaps make lots of lift. The pilot lands slowly. The strip is short.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! This kind of flying is called STOL, short for short takeoff and landing. Bush planes can use skis on snow. They can use floats on water. They help people in remote places.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! On a map of Canada, find three remote places that might need a bush plane. Ask a grown-up to help. Say why a plane would help there. Draw a bush plane. Keep asking why, and keep exploring!

Outro

Bush planes land on short, bumpy strips thanks to soft tires, big flaps, and slow, careful landings. Science is amazing! Keep wondering and keep exploring! Every question is a new adventure, so keep wondering and keep exploring with me! So the next time you wonder about this, you will know just where to start looking.
