Can a Plane Fly on Human Leg Power?

What Crafty Clover says in this video

Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Can a plane fly on human leg power?

The Big Idea

Could you fly by pedaling? Someone really did it! Across the English Channel.

Pedal to Fly

Step one: pedal to fly. In nineteen seventy-nine, a pedal-powered plane called the Gossamer Albatross flew across the English Channel, about twenty-two miles. One cyclist-pilot pedaled a propeller.

Giant Light Wings

Step two: giant, light wings. It had huge, very light wings made of foam, plastic, and thin tubes. The plane weighed about as much as a big dog.

Weight Matters

Step three: weight matters. Human-powered flight shows how important light weight is. Engineers fight for every ounce.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look! The pilot pedals. The propeller spins. The wings are huge and light. The plane crosses the sea.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Its wings stretched about ninety-six feet. That is longer than two school buses parked end to end. It weighed about as much as a big dog. It crossed the English Channel.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Make a super-light paper glider using the smallest possible sheet. Launch it gently. How does the weight change its flight? Compare it to a bigger glider. Share your results with someone you love.
