How Do Airplanes Slow Down So Fast After They Land?

What Crafty Clover says in this video

Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. How do airplanes slow down so fast after they land?

The Big Idea

A landing plane rushes down the runway. Then it slows down quickly. It uses several tools at once!

Spoilers

Step one: spoilers. A landing airplane uses several tools at once. Spoilers press the plane onto the runway.

Wheel Brakes

Step two: wheel brakes. Wheel brakes slow the wheels. They can get very hot, so planes have special cooling.

Reverse Thrust

Step three: reverse thrust. Reverse thrust sends engine air forward. It is created by doors or blockers that redirect the air.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look! Spoilers press the plane down. Brakes slow the wheels. Reverse thrust pushes air forward. The plane stops.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! A big jet can stop from 150 miles per hour in about a mile of runway. The brakes can get very hot. Planes have special cooling. Reverse thrust sends air forward.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Roll a toy car down a ramp and see how far it goes. Add a patch of sandpaper to slow it. Compare the distances. Measure with a ruler. Write down what you notice, and share it with a grown-up.

Outro

A landing plane stops fast by combining spoilers, brakes, and reverse thrust. Brakes, spoilers, and reverse thrust all work as a team, and pilots practice using them together. Science is amazing! Stay curious! Next time you see this in real life, remember what you learned today and smile! Keep your eyes open, because science is hiding in the things you see every day.
