What Are the Panels That Pop Up on the Wings After Landing?

What Crafty Clover says in this video

Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. What are the panels that pop up on the wings after landing?

The Big Idea

After landing, panels pop up on the wings. They look like little flaps standing up. What are they doing?

Spoil the Airflow

Step one: spoil the airflow. These panels are called spoilers. When a plane lands, they pop up on top of the wings and spoil the smooth airflow, so the wings stop making lift.

Weight on the Wheels

Step two: weight on the wheels. The plane's weight then settles onto the wheels. The brakes work better.

Other Jobs

Step three: other jobs. Spoilers can also help a plane lose height during descent and slow down in the air. Raised on just one wing, they can help a plane roll.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look! The panels pop up. The wing stops lifting. The plane settles down. The brakes can grip.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Spoilers can be raised on just one wing to help a plane roll. They help the brakes work better. They help a plane lose height. They slow the plane in the air.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Make a paper plane. Lift a wing flap up like a spoiler. Does the glide get shorter? Throw it gently, away from faces. Tell a grown-up what you discover!
