How Do Ailerons Help a Plane Roll and Turn?

What Crafty Clover says in this video

Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. How do ailerons help a plane roll and turn?

The Big Idea

A plane can roll to the left or right in the sky. Little flaps on the wings make that happen. They are called ailerons!

Hinged Flaps

Step one: hinged flaps. Ailerons are small hinged flaps at the back edges of the wings, near the tips. They move up and down.

Opposite Moves

Step two: opposite moves. When one aileron goes up, that wing gets less lift and dips. When the other goes down, that wing gets more lift and rises, so the plane rolls to one side.

Pilot Control

Step three: pilot control. The pilot moves the ailerons by turning the control wheel or moving the stick from side to side. The plane rolls the way they choose.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look! One aileron goes up. The other goes down. One wing dips. The other rises.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Ailerons always move in opposite directions on the two wings. They sit near the wing tips. Pilots use a wheel or a stick. They make the plane roll sideways.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Cut small flaps in the back of a paper plane's wings. Bend one up and one down. Toss the plane gently. Watch it roll. Then explain what you learned to a friend.

Outro

Ailerons are small flaps on the wings that move in opposite directions to make a plane roll. Science is amazing! What will you discover next?
