Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. What happens to the four forces during takeoff, cruising, and landing?

The Big Idea

A flight has three big parts. Take-off, cruising, and landing. The four forces change in each one!

Take-Off

Step one: take-off. At take-off, thrust is big and lift rises as speed builds. Soon the lift is greater than the weight.

Cruise

Step two: cruise. In cruise, the forces balance. Weight stays about the same except for burned fuel.

Landing

Step three: landing. At landing, the pilot reduces thrust and uses flaps for more lift at low speed. Drag from flaps and brakes slows the plane.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look! At take-off, thrust is large. In cruise, forces balance. At landing, drag slows the plane. Each part is a new balance.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! A landing jet touches down at about one hundred fifty miles per hour. Cruise is balanced flight. Take-off needs big thrust. Landing uses flaps and brakes to slow down.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Draw three small planes. Make one for take-off, one for cruising, and one for landing. On each, make the force arrows longer or shorter. Show which force is biggest in each. Write down what you notice, and share it with a grown-up.

Outro

During take-off, cruising, and landing, the four forces change how they compete, and pilots keep control. Weight stays almost the same, but the forces trade places at every stage. Science is amazing! Keep asking questions! Share what you learned with someone at home, and see what they think! Thank you for exploring with me, and remember that every great scientist started with a question.
