Why Do Long-Distance Power Lines Use Such High Voltage?

What Crafty Clover says in this video

Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why do long-distance power lines use such high voltage?

The Big Idea

Big power lines carry electricity over long distances. They use very high voltage to do it. Let's learn why!

Wires Warm Up

Step one: wires warm up. Electricity loses energy as heat when it flows through wires. The longer the trip, the more is lost.

High Voltage Helps

Step two: high voltage helps. Using a very high voltage lets the same amount of power flow with much less current. So less energy is lost along the way.

Transformers

Step three: transformers. Transformers raise the voltage at the power plant and lower it again near homes. Power lines are dangerous, so stay far away from them and from any fallen wires.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look! The plant makes power. A transformer raises the voltage. Long lines carry it far. Another transformer lowers it.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Some long power lines carry hundreds of thousands of volts. Less current means less energy lost as heat. Stay far away from power lines. If you see a fallen wire, tell a grown-up right away.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Look for the big metal towers or tall poles near your neighborhood. Do it from far away with a grown-up. Draw one and label the wires. Never go near them. Write down what you notice, and share it with a grown-up.

Outro

Long-distance power lines use high voltage so less energy is lost as heat. Always stay far away from power lines and fallen wires! Science is amazing! Stay curious!
