What Is the Power Grid?

What Crafty Clover says in this video

Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. What is the power grid?

The Big Idea

Electricity travels a long way to reach your home. It rides along a giant network of wires. It is called the power grid!

What Is in It

Step one: what is in it. The grid is a huge network of power plants, wires, towers, and transformers. It connects homes, schools, and businesses.

Move the Power

Step two: move the power. Electricity moves from where it is made to where it is used. It travels along the wires all day and night.

Match the Use

Step three: match the use. Because electricity cannot be stored easily in large amounts, plants must produce about as much as people use at each moment. Workers watch the grid all day and night.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look! Plants make the power. Towers carry it far. Neighborhoods use it. Workers watch it all day and night.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! The North American power grid is one of the largest machines ever built. Remember, workers watch it all day and night. Plants must make about as much power as people use. That is because large amounts of electricity are hard to store.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Draw a map with a power plant, towers, a neighborhood, and your home. Connect them with lines. Those lines show the grid. Add arrows to show which way the power flows. Tell a grown-up what you discover!
