How Do Deep-Sea Animals Get by with So Little Food?

What Crafty Clover says in this video

Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. How do deep-sea animals get by with so little food?

The Big Idea

The deep ocean is dark and cold. No sunlight reaches it, so no plants grow. So how do animals down there get by?

Marine Snow

Step one: marine snow. In the deep ocean, there is no sunlight, so no plants grow. Food comes from above as bits of dead plankton and other material falling like snow.

Slow and Steady

Step two: slow and steady. Deep-sea animals have slow metabolisms and move little to save energy. Some can wait a long time between meals.

Clever Tricks

Step three: clever tricks. Many have special tricks, such as glowing lures that attract the few animals that pass by. Some fish have stomachs that stretch to hold meals larger than themselves.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look! Marine snow falls from above. A fish waits quietly. A glowing lure attracts prey. It saves energy until dinner.

Quick Facts
