Why Do Migrating Birds Eat So Much Before a Long Trip?

What Crafty Clover says in this video

Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why do migrating birds eat so much before a long trip?

The Big Idea

Some birds fly across whole oceans without stopping to eat. That takes a lot of fuel. So they fill up before they go!

Flying Uses a Lot

Step one: flying uses a lot. Flying uses a huge amount of energy. Many migrating birds cross oceans without stopping to eat.

Eat Extra

Step two: eat extra. Before leaving, they eat extra food and store it as fat. A small ruby-throated hummingbird nearly doubles its weight before crossing the Gulf of Mexico.

Record Flights

Step three: record flights. One bar-tailed godwit flew more than seven thousand miles without stopping. It was fueled by its stored fat.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look! A hummingbird eats extra food. It stores the extra as fat. It flies over the sea. Fat fuels every wingbeat.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Fat is the best fuel for long flights because it holds so much energy for its weight. A ruby-throated hummingbird nearly doubles its weight before crossing the Gulf of Mexico. A bar-tailed godwit flew over seven thousand miles without stopping. Birds fill up before they leave.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Weigh a small bag of marbles. Now add some more marbles and weigh again. Imagine how a bird's weight changes before migrating. Why does a bird want to be lighter after the trip? Share your results with someone you love.

Outro

Migrating birds eat a lot before a long trip because fat is the best fuel for flying. Some even fly across whole oceans! Science is amazing! Stay curious!
