What Kinds of Energy Are There?

What Crafty Clover says in this video

Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. What kinds of energy are there?

The Big Idea

Energy comes in many forms. Moving things, hot things, light, sound, and electricity are all energy. Let's meet the family!

Motion and Heat

Step one: motion and heat. Moving things have motion energy, and hot things have thermal energy. A rolling bike has one, and a cup of cocoa has the other.

Light, Sound, Electricity

Step two: light, sound, and electricity. Light, sound, and electricity are forms of energy too. The sun shines it, a speaker shakes it, and wires carry it.

Stored Energy

Step three: stored energy. Food, fuel, and batteries store chemical energy. Stretched springs and raised objects store energy too, ready for later.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look! A rolling ball has motion energy. A hot stove has heat energy. A lamp gives light energy. A battery stores chemical energy.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! All the forms of energy can change from one into another, and that is what makes things happen. Food, fuel, and batteries all store chemical energy. Stretched springs and raised objects store energy too. Scientists often sort energy into just two big groups, stored and moving.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Draw a table with six squares. Label them motion, heat, light, sound, electrical, and chemical. Draw one example in each square. Which square was the easiest to fill? Share your results with someone you love.
