Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why do magnetic north and true north point different ways?

The Big Idea

A compass needle does not point exactly to the North Pole. It points toward a different spot, called magnetic north. Let's find out why those two norths are different, and why hikers need to know about it!

True North

Step one: true north. True north is the direction toward the North Pole, where Earth's spinning axis ends. Maps and stars use this direction, and it never moves around.

Magnetic North

Step two: magnetic north. Magnetic north is where a compass needle points, toward Earth's magnetic pole. These two places are not the same.

The Difference

Step three: the difference. The needle can be off by a few degrees or by a lot, depending on where you are. The difference is called magnetic declination, and hikers' maps often show it.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look! True north is the North Pole. Magnetic north is somewhere else. The angle between them is the declination. Hikers check it on their maps.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Maps for hikers often show the local declination. The gap is measured in degrees. True north does not move around. A compass points to magnetic north instead.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Draw two dots on a map. One is for true north and one is for magnetic north. Draw an arrow from your home to each dot. The angle between the arrows is the declination. Keep asking why, and keep exploring!

Outro

Magnetic north and true north are different places, and the gap between them is called declination. Science is amazing! What will you discover next? Crafty Clover can be found on Amazon Books, Google Bookstore, and Apple Books. Available for purchase or download! Bye for now!
