Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why is Earth’s magnetic bubble shaped like a comet?

The Big Idea

Earth's magnetic bubble is not round like a ball. It is squeezed on one side and stretched on the other, a bit like a comet. Let's find out why!

Squeezed on the Sun Side

Step one: squeezed on the Sun side. The solar wind pushes on the side of the bubble that faces the Sun. That squeezes the bubble tight on that side.

Stretched Into a Tail

Step two: stretched into a tail. On the opposite side, the wind drags the field out into a very long tail. It is like a windsock streaming out behind a flag pole.

The Magnetotail

Step three: the magnetotail. This tail is called the magnetotail, and it stretches farther than the Moon's orbit. The Moon passes through it once each month.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look! The Sun is on one side. The bubble is squeezed there. On the other side, a long tail streams out. The Moon passes through it each month.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! The night-side tail can reach hundreds of thousands of miles. Even the Moon passes through it every month. The tail is like a windsock. Altogether, the bubble is shaped like a comet.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Hold a streamer or ribbon in front of a fan on low speed. Watch the streamer stretch out downwind. That is like the magnetotail. Ask a grown-up to help with the fan. Share your results with someone you love.

Outro

Earth's magnetic bubble is squeezed by the solar wind on one side and stretched into a long tail on the other. Science is amazing! Crafty Clover can be found on Amazon Books, Google Bookstore, and Apple Books. Available for purchase or download! Bye for now!
