How Do Hikers Stay Safe Around Mountain Wildlife?

What Crafty Clover says in this video

Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. How do hikers stay safe around mountain wildlife?

The Big Idea

Hikers stay safe around mountain wildlife by giving animals plenty of space. Wild animals need room to eat, rest, and raise their young, and they can be unpredictable. Here is how hikers keep a respectful distance.

Keep Your Distance

Step one: stay far away. In Canada's mountain parks, visitors stay at least 100 meters from bears and wolves, about 330 feet. Stay 30 meters, about 100 feet, from other large animals like elk.

Never Feed or Approach

Step two: never feed or approach animals. Fed animals can lose their fear of people and become dangerous. Animals do best when they find their own wild food, not snacks from people.

Be Smart on the Trail

Step three: hike smart. Hike in a group, make noise on trails so animals are not surprised, and store food properly. Grown-ups carry bear spray in bear country.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look at wildlife safety! Space keeps animals and people safe. Never feed or approach animals. A group makes noise and is easier to notice. And stored food will not attract hungry visitors.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Fed animals can lose their fear of people and become dangerous. A good view can be from far away, with binoculars. Never run or chase wildlife for a photo. Stay close to your grown-ups on the trail.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Measure 30 big steps outside to see how far a safe distance is. Do the same for 100 steps. Draw a sign that reminds visitors to keep wildlife wild. Show it to a friend.
