Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why do mountain trails have steps, boardwalks, and little ditches?

The Big Idea

Mountain trails have steps, boardwalks, and little ditches to protect the land. Busy trails can wear away, because thousands of boots and lots of rain push the soil around. Trail builders add these features to keep the path strong.

Stone Steps

Step one: stone steps hold steep ground. On steep sections, steps keep the soil from crumbling under many boots. They also make the climb safer, and they give boots a firm place to land.

Boardwalks

Step two: boardwalks cross wet meadows. They keep feet dry and protect the soft ground and plants. Without them, the meadow would turn into mud, and the plants would be crushed.

Water Bars

Step three: water bars guide rain off the path. Small ditches or logs, called water bars, send water to the side. This stops soil from washing away, so the trail does not turn into a gully.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look at trail features! Steps hold the steep ground. Boardwalks protect wet meadows. Water bars send rain away. Together, they work like a raincoat for the trail.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Trail crews often carry stones to the right spot by hand. Some trails take years to build, one stone at a time. The features keep soil in place and feet dry. Please stay on the trail and use the steps.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Make a sand slope on a tray. Pour water down a smooth path, then down a path with little ridges across it. Which path holds up better? Tell why.
