Why Do Hikers Carry the “Ten Essentials”?

What Crafty Clover says in this video

Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why do hikers carry the “ten essentials”?

The Big Idea

Hikers carry the ten essentials because they help everyone stay safe if plans change. They are small items that can matter a lot, and they all fit in a daypack. Kids hike with grown-ups, who carry the gear.

Find Your Way

Step one: find your way. A map and compass help hikers know where they are, and a headlamp helps when it gets dark. Plans can change, and the sun can set sooner than expected, so a light is a must.

Stay Healthy and Warm

Step two: stay healthy and warm. Sun protection, first aid, extra clothes, and an emergency shelter help in surprises. Weather in the mountains can change quickly, from sunny to cold and windy.

Food, Water, Tools

Step three: carry extra supplies. Extra food and extra water help if a hike takes longer than planned. Grown-ups carry and use the knife and fire starters, not kids.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look at the essentials! Navigation tools, like a map and compass, show the way. Extra clothes keep you warm. First aid helps with small injuries. Extra food and water keep energy up.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! The list of ten essentials started in the 1930s. The items are small, but they can matter a lot. A grown-up leader carries the knife and fire starters. Kids hike with grown-ups, never alone.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Pack a pretend daypack using a list of the ten essentials. Use stuffed toys and toy items. Which one do you think is most useful? Tell a grown-up why.
