What Are Cairns and Trail Blazes?

What Crafty Clover says in this video

Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. What are cairns and trail blazes?

The Big Idea

Cairns and trail blazes are markers that help hikers stay on the path. A cairn is a small pile of stacked rocks. A blaze is a painted mark on a tree.

Above the Trees

Step one: above the treeline, trail builders stack rocks. There are no trees up there to mark the way. So small piles of rocks, called cairns, show where to go.

Below the Trees

Step two: below the treeline, there are blazes. Blazes are painted marks on trees, often a small stripe at eye level. They show the path through the forest, one tree after another.

Help in Fog and Snow

Step three: markers help when it is hard to see. In fog or snow, a trail can disappear. Visitors should not build new cairns, because they can confuse other people.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look at trail markers! A cairn is a pile of stacked rocks. A blaze is a painted mark on a tree. Both help when fog or snow hides the path. Please do not build new cairns, because they can send people the wrong way.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Some cairns have guided travelers for hundreds of years. Cairns are built where there are no trees. Blazes are painted where there are trees. Leave the rocks where they are, and follow the marks, because moved rocks can mislead others.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Design a trail marker symbol using three simple shapes. Use chalk to mark a path in your yard. Can a friend follow it? Keep it clear and simple, so anyone can understand it.

Markers keep explorers on the path. Science is amazing! Crafty Clover can be found on Amazon Books, Google Bookstore, and Apple Books. Available for purchase or download! Bye for now!
