How Does a Contour Map Show a Mountain?

What Crafty Clover says in this video

Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. How does a contour map show a mountain?

The Big Idea

A contour map shows a mountain's height using curvy lines. Each line connects places that are the same height. Hikers read contour lines to picture the land, even before they arrive.

Lines at One Height

Step one: each line has one height. A contour line connects places that are exactly the same height. Each line might mean 20 or 40 meters of height change, and the map tells you which.

Close or Far Apart

Step two: spacing shows steepness. Where lines are close together, the slope is steep. Where they are far apart, the ground is gentle and flat, like a meadow.

Rings and Vs

Step three: shapes tell stories. Rings inside rings show a peak, with the smallest ring at the top. Where lines make a V across a stream, the V points uphill.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look at contours! Each line is one height. Lines packed close together mean a steep slope. Rings inside rings mean a peak. And a V that points uphill shows a stream valley.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Each contour line might mean 20 or 40 meters of height change. Close lines mean steep, and far lines mean gentle. A map can show a mountain flat on paper. Hikers use maps and a grown-up's skills to plan trips.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Set a small clay hill in a clear plastic tub. Add a little water, and trace the water's edge with a marker. Add more water, and trace again. Look from above. Those rings are contour lines!

Contour lines flatten a mountain onto paper. Science is amazing! Crafty Clover can be found on Amazon Books, Google Bookstore, and Apple Books. Available for purchase or download! Bye for now!
