Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. What colors make up the layers of a faraway mountain?

The Big Idea

A faraway mountain looks like a layered cake of colors! Each band of color is a different habitat, a different home for plants and animals. Let's peel back the layers.

Tan and Green Base

Step one: the base. At the bottom, shrubs and grassland look tan or green. This is the warm, dry foothill zone, where deer and coyotes roam.

Dark Green Forests

Step two: the forests. Above them, dark green stripes show forests. Different kinds of trees give each forest band its own shade of green.

Meadow, Rock, and Snow

Step three: meadow, rock, and snow. Then comes a lighter band of alpine meadow, where flowers and low plants grow, followed by gray rock and white snow. The bands are like a layered cake of habitats.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look! Tan means dry shrubs and grass. Dark green means thick forest. Light green means alpine meadow, with flowers and low plants. And white means snow and ice, with gray rock around it.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Different kinds of trees give each forest band its own shade of green. Fall colors can add yellow and orange stripes, when aspens and larches change. Bands can bend up and down, because slopes facing the sun are warmer than shady ones. The farther away the mountain is, the bluer the colors look.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Take a photo or draw a mountain in your area. Mark each color band. Write what might live there. Then share your mountain with a grown-up! Share what you discover with a grown-up.

Outro

Color bands tell the story of life on a mountain. Science is amazing! Crafty Clover can be found on Amazon Books, Google Bookstore, and Apple Books. Available for purchase or download! Bye for now!
