Why Do We Celebrate Birthdays?

What Crafty Clover says in this video

Intro

Hey there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why do we celebrate birthdays?

The Big Idea

A birthday is a special day that comes once a year. It marks one more trip around the sun. A marker on the life map! Birthdays are also a fun way to think about time and growing up.

Earth Orbits the Sun

Step one: Earth goes around the sun. Our planet travels in a big circle around the sun. It is called an orbit. Earth travels around the sun at about 30 kilometers every second.

A Year Passes

Step two: a year passes. One full trip around the sun takes about 365 days, which we call a year. On the day you were born, Earth is back in the same spot. Some kids born on February 29th celebrate in a leap year, which happens every four years.

People Mark the Day

Step three: people mark the day, and you feel seen. Friends and family celebrate, to show you are important. You are one year older, and one year wiser! Different cultures count birthdays in different ways, but all of them celebrate life.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look at a birthday! Earth orbits the sun. One full trip is one year. And a birthday marks that trip.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Not every culture uses cake, but the mark still matters. Some families celebrate with special foods, songs, or blessings. Some places celebrate a name day or a special age. Celebrating helps us feel that we belong.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Ask how two families mark the day. Ask two friends or relatives how they celebrate birthdays. Write down each way. Look for what is the same. What is different? A birthday is a great time to look back at how much you have learned.
