Why Do We Use Money?

What Crafty Clover says in this video

Intro

Hey there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why do we use money?

The Big Idea

Long ago, people had to trade things directly. Imagine trading a goat for a loaf of bread! Money lets you trade your work for things you need, without carrying a goat around. A token that stands for value! Money is an idea that we all agree on, and it works because people trust it.

You Do Work

Step one: you do work. You help, or make something useful, like growing food or fixing a bike. Other people value the work you do. Long ago, some places used shells, salt, and metal coins as money.

You Get Tokens

Step two: you get tokens. You are paid in money, which stands for the value of your work. Coins, bills, and even digital money are all tokens. Today, we also pay with cards and phones, which move digital money.

You Trade Tokens

Step three: you trade tokens for bread or a book. You choose what you need or want, and you pass your tokens to someone else. Tokens get you what matters to you, and the other person can use them, too.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look at money! Coins and bills are tokens that stand for value. Prices tell you how much something is worth. And saving means keeping tokens for later.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Long ago, people traded fish for cloth. Before money, people used trade, which only works if both people want what the other has. Today, most money is digital, like the numbers in a bank account. Saving and sharing are two smart ways to use money.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Pretend you have five tokens. Imagine you have exactly five tokens to spend. Think about what you need most. Pick your top three needs. Which one did you choose first?
