Intro

Hey there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why are some kids twins?

The Big Idea

Twins are two babies who grow at the same time, in the same parent. They can start from one egg that splits, or from two eggs at once. One start, or two! Twins are not very common, but they happen in every part of the world.

Two Eggs or One Split

Step one: two eggs, or one that splits. Sometimes two separate eggs are fertilized at the same time. And sometimes, one egg splits into two very early on. Twins may share the same birthday, but they can be very different from each other.

Two Babies Grow

Step two: two babies grow. Either way, two babies grow together inside their parent. They are born around the same time. Identical twins can even have tiny differences in their fingerprints and freckles.

Identical or Fraternal

Step three: identical or fraternal. Identical twins come from one egg that split, so they share almost all of their genes and look very alike. Fraternal twins come from two eggs, so they are like regular brothers and sisters who arrived together.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look at the two kinds of twins! Identical twins come from one egg that splits. Fraternal twins come from two different eggs. And both kinds are two kids with two stories.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Identical twins still have their own fingerprints. Fraternal twins can be different sexes, but identical twins are always the same. About 3 in every 100 babies are twins. Twins can have different personalities and likes.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Ask what identical and fraternal mean. Ask a grown-up, or a twin you know, a question. What makes twins identical? What makes twins fraternal? Write down what you learn.

Outro

Twins are proof that every kid is special, even when they look alike. Science is amazing! Crafty Clover can be found on Amazon Books, Google Bookstore, and Apple Books. Available for purchase or download! Bye for now!
