Intro

Hey there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why do we shed skin?

The Big Idea

Skin is your body's largest organ, and it is always renewing itself. Top skin cells flake off, so fresh cells can take their place. New skin from underneath! You are never really the same skin from one month to the next.

New Cells Form Below

Step one: new cells form below. Deep down in your skin, new cells are being made all the time. It never stops. The top layer of skin is made of flat, hard cells, which protect the soft parts underneath.

Old Cells Rise

Step two: old cells rise. The new cells slowly move upward through the layers of your skin. On the way, they flatten out and dry out. Shedding is a healthy sign that your skin is working well.

They Flake Away

Step three: they flake away, and your skin stays a living shield. At the top, old dried cells flake off, and new skin underneath keeps protecting you. You do not feel it, because it happens a tiny bit at a time.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look at your skin! At the bottom, new cells are made. In the middle, the cells move upward. And at the top, old cells flake off.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! You shed tiny flakes every day, and you never see most of them. Your whole outer skin renews about every 4 weeks. Much of the dust in a home is made of tiny bits of dead skin. Washing gently helps your skin stay healthy.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! After a dry day, look for dust on a dark shirt. Wear a dark shirt for a day, if you have one. At the end of the day, look at it in bright light. Look closely with a magnifying glass. What do you see?
