Intro
Hey there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why do we have two ears?
The Big Idea
Having two ears helps you find where a sound is coming from. A sound usually hits one ear a tiny bit sooner than the other. Your brain uses that little difference to work out the direction. It is like having your own built-in sound radar.
Sound Starts
Step one: a sound starts. Sound travels as waves that spread out in all directions. Maybe it is a bell, a clap, or a friend calling your name. Sound travels through air at a high speed, but not infinitely fast.
Near Ear Hears First
Step two: the near ear hears first. The ear closest to the sound gets it a tiny moment sooner. The difference is only a fraction of a second. Your head sits between your ears and blocks some sound.
Brain Compares
Step three: your brain compares. It checks the timing and the loudness from both ears. Then it figures out which direction the sound came from. That block also makes one ear hear a bit louder.
A Closer Look
Let's take a closer look at finding a sound. The sound source is where the noise begins. Your two ears each send a signal to your brain. And then you can point to it, because you found it! That is how you know where a sound is coming from.
Quick Facts
Quick facts! Cover one ear and hide-and-seek gets harder. A sound from straight ahead reaches both ears at once. Some animals, like owls, are amazing at locating sounds. Your brain can tell time differences of a tiny fraction of a second. Your ears and brain are a great team.
Think Like a Scientist
Now, think like a scientist! Close your eyes. Ask a grown-up to snap their fingers on your left or your right. Point to where the sound came from. Did you get it right?
