Intro

Hey there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why do we have two eyes?

The Big Idea

Each of your eyes sees a slightly different picture. Your brain puts the two pictures together. That gives you a feeling of depth, so you can tell how far away things are. It is how you catch a ball, pour a drink, and thread a needle.

Left Eye View

Step one: your left eye has its view. It sees things from the left side. Try holding up a finger and closing one eye. This is called binocular vision, which means seeing with two eyes.

Right Eye View

Step two: your right eye has its view. It sees things from the right side. Switch eyes, and the finger seems to jump! The brain is great at matching up the two pictures.

Brain Combines Them

Step three: your brain combines them. It mashes the two views together into one picture. The small differences between them make things look 3D. It happens so quickly that you never notice the work.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look at judging distance. The hand reaches out to grab the mug. The dotted lines show the two lines of sight from your two eyes. And your brain uses them to guess how far away the mug is. Try this at home to see it yourself.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Cover one eye and reaching for a cup gets harder. People who see with one eye use other clues for depth. Animals with eyes on the sides see a wider view. Animals with eyes in front, like us, are great at judging distance. Your eyes are best friends who work as a team.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Get a sock and a target, like a bucket or a box. Stand a few steps back, and toss the sock with both eyes open. Then close one eye and toss again. Which is harder, and why?
