Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why does a river need oxygen?

The Big Idea

A river needs oxygen because fish, insects, and other river animals breathe it! The oxygen is dissolved in the water, mixed in invisibly. Without enough oxygen, river animals cannot stay healthy.

Breathing Underwater

Step one: breathing underwater. Fish, insects, and other river animals breathe oxygen that is dissolved in the water. Fish take it in through their gills, which work like underwater lungs, and insects have their own ways to breathe it.

Rapids Add Air

Step two: rapids add oxygen. When water tumbles over rocks, it mixes with air and picks up oxygen. That is why rapids are great for river life. Splashing is nature's air pump.

Less Oxygen

Step three: things that reduce oxygen. Warm water and rotting plants can reduce oxygen, because warm water holds less and rot uses it up. Scientists use meters to measure dissolved oxygen, and cool, flowing, shaded rivers are best.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look! Rapids splash air into the water. Oxygen dissolves in the river. Shade keeps the river cool. And fish stay healthy with plenty of oxygen.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Cold water holds more oxygen than warm water. That is why trout like cold mountain streams. A meter can tell exactly how much oxygen is in the water, even in a tiny sample. Look at rapids from the bank with a grown-up.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Fill a jar halfway with water and put on the lid. Shake it and see the bubbles. These bubbles show air mixing in, just as a rapid does. Then show a grown-up your bubbles!

Rivers need oxygen for their animals. Science is amazing! Crafty Clover can be found on Amazon Books, Google Bookstore, and Apple Books. Available for purchase or download! Bye for now!
