Intro
Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. How do scientists tell how cloudy a river is?
The Big Idea
Scientists tell how cloudy a river is by measuring how much light gets through! Cloudy water is called turbid, and the cloudiness is called turbidity. It comes from tiny bits floating in the water.
What Makes It Cloudy
Step one: find the cause. Cloudy water is called turbid, and the cloudiness is called turbidity. It comes from tiny bits of mud, silt, or algae floating in the water.
Light Meter
Step two: use a meter. Scientists shine light through a water sample and measure how much light gets scattered by the floating bits. More scattering means more cloudiness.
Secchi Disk
Step three: lower a disk. A Secchi disk is a black-and-white circle lowered into the water until it disappears from view. Very cloudy water can be hard for fish and plants.
A Closer Look
Let's take a closer look! Mud and silt make water cloudy. A meter shines light through a sample. A disk is lowered into the water. The depth where it vanishes tells how clear the water is.
Quick Facts
Quick facts! The deeper you can still see the Secchi disk, the clearer the water. The disk is named for an Italian scientist who invented it in 1865. Cloudy water blocks sunlight that underwater plants need. Measure from a safe spot on the bank with a grown-up.
Think Like a Scientist
Now, think like a scientist! Drop a white button or coin into a glass of clear water. Add a spoonful of soil and stir. How deep can you see it now? Then tell a grown-up what changed!

Light and a disk tell us how clear a river is. Science is amazing! Crafty Clover can be found on Amazon Books, Google Bookstore, and Apple Books. Available for purchase or download! Bye for now!
