Intro
Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. How can you follow a raindrop from your street to the sea?
The Big Idea
A raindrop that lands on your street takes a trip to the sea! It flows to the gutter, into a storm drain, and through pipes to a nearby creek or river. From there, it travels on to the ocean.
Down the Street
Step one: down the street. A raindrop lands on the road and runs downhill to the curb. Soon it slips into the gutter, along with leaves and bits of dirt.
Storm Drain
Step two: the storm drain. Storm drains carry rainwater through underground pipes. The pipes end at a nearby creek or river.
On to the Sea
Step three: on to the sea. The creek joins a larger river. That river leads on to a lake or the ocean.
A Closer Look
Let's take a closer look at the raindrop's trip! It starts on your street. It rushes into the storm drain. The pipe sends it to a creek. And the rivers lead it to the sea. Everything on the street goes along for the ride.
Quick Facts
Quick facts! Storm drains often lead straight to a stream, without any cleaning. Litter or oil on the street travels with the rain. So only rain should go down the drain. Look at storm drains from the sidewalk, with a grown-up.
Think Like a Scientist
Now, think like a scientist! With a grown-up, find a storm drain near you. See if it has a label. Look up on a map where your local creek goes. Follow it all the way to the sea! You just followed a raindrop!
