Intro
Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Where does river water go after it reaches the sea?
The Big Idea
River water goes back up into the sky after it reaches the sea! The Sun heats the ocean, and the water travels in a big circle called the water cycle. Today's river water could have been in a cloud last week.
Evaporation
Step one: evaporation. The Sun warms the ocean's surface, and some water evaporates into the air. It rises as a gas called water vapor.
Clouds Form
Step two: clouds form. High up, the air is cool, so the vapor condenses into tiny drops. Those drops gather into clouds.
Rain Returns
Step three: rain and snow. Clouds drop rain or snow on hills and mountains. The water runs into rivers, and heads to the sea once more.
A Closer Look
Let's take a closer look at the water cycle! The sea gives water to the air. Clouds carry the water over the land. Mountains catch the rain and snow. And rivers carry the water home again. Around and around it goes.
Quick Facts
Quick facts! The water cycle has no beginning or end. Earth has been reusing the same water for billions of years. A drop in a river today may have been in a cloud last week. Stay with a grown-up near any river.
Think Like a Scientist
Now, think like a scientist! Draw a loop with the sea, a cloud, a mountain, and a river. Add arrows to show how water travels in a circle. Label evaporation, clouds, and rain. Show your drawing to a grown-up. You just drew the water cycle!
